Obesity is the state of having excessive body fat. Very likely you have been through the frustration of dieting more than once in your life, if you have weight problems. About one hundred million Americans try a weight loss diet every year and about ninety-five percent of them regain any weight they lose within the next five years. Even worse, one third  of them will will regain more weight than they lost on the diet.

 Many are in danger of changing frequently from one popular diet plan to some other. The usual approach to an overweight problem, in which the focus is on a fast weight loss diet or on a weight loss drug, will often leave you  just as heavy and possibly in poor health. At the present time, it is  estimated that sixty-five percent of American adults are either obese or considerably overweight. The present day culture is obsessed with being thin even as on average we get fatter.

This is not only about appearance however. Obesity very often leads to debilitating health problems such as heart disease,diabetes, arthritis, high blood pressure and other serious conditions. Obesity is a contributing factor in about 375,000 deaths per annum. To add to this, health care costs resulting from obesity are absolutely staggering. Researchers at Harvard University have shown that, obesity is at least partially to blame for 19% of all cases of heart disease. Annual health costs resulting from this are estimated to be in excess of 30 billion dollars. Obesity is also also a factor in 57% of people suffering from diabetes, with resulting health costs of more than $9 billion per annum.

Set A Realistic Weight Loss Goal. Many of us have fallen for some of the weight loss diet schemes over the years. We were promised fast and easy weight loss. At least some of these quick weight loss schemes can damage your health, and will lead to  severe disappointment, when you begin to regain weight, soon after losing it on the diet.

Many quick weight loss diets rely on eating only one type of food. The  fundamental principles of good nutrition  are ignored. If you wifh to remain healthy it is necessary to be on a balanced diet, which will include a wide variety of different foods. Permanent weight loss in a safe and healthy way is totally absent in hundreds of popular diet plans.

Many of these weight loss diets are popular only briefly and then fade out. Some lose popularity because they do not work or are unhealthy. Others just don't pique public curiosity for very long. Some such diets include the Atkins diet, the South Beach Diet,the Cabbage Soup diet, the Grapefruit diet,the Beverly Hills diet, the Rotation diet – and so on on.  Most of these fad diets will depend on a specific method.Eliminating some foods,or living on some combination of foods along with with the presumption that the body will make up the difference in calories by breaking down and using body fat. This simply will not work for the long term and is certain to end in dissapointment.
