For certain people, emotional distress can result from their inability
to attain the weight target they have decided on. This distress
may even become serious depression in some cases. There are some weight
loss drugs which are effective, but some of them, Acomplia in
particular, can become the cause of serious depression in some people.
Weight and appearance are major concerns in our modern world, so much
so that some people will become more or less obsessed with
reaching what they visualise as the “perfect” weight.
Weight loss medication that helps attain that perfect weight becomes
quite materially valuable and also expensive in terms of financial
cost.
British and Danish researchers independently confirmed that
one diet pill, namely Acomplia, can cause serious depression in
some individuals. According to their studies, the risk of various
emotional disorders during use of the drug, was significantly
increased. There were even longer term residual effects after regular
use of the pills was discontinued. The studies found that people who
were given

Acomplia during the tests were more than twice as likely to develop an
emotional disorder than people who were given a placebo. People who
were treated with Acomplia were more likely to develop anxiety or
emotional problems than people who were treated with a placebo.
US health authorities have withdrawn Acomplia from the market in the
States citing psychological effects it could have. This was
actually decided on before the study conducted by Danish scientists was
published in the Lancet Journal. Doctors whose patients have already
been treated with Acomplia are advised to watch for any symptoms of
these psychological effects. Suicidal thinking and depressed behavior
are particularly to be watched for. There were also some other effects
that could be equally severe, but were less likely to be seen except
after long term use of the drug.
The study found that the drug did work in combating obesity however.
All those who were subjected to the study and given the medication
lost weight over the one year period. Unfortunately however,
there was also a 40% increased risk of emotional disorders, and a
definite potential risk of more long term psychological damage.
Maintained use of the medication provided weight loss and positive
cardiovascular results. Medical authorities however state that the
positive effects do not outweigh the possible negative effects of long
term use of the drug.
The study casts doubts on the safety of people using the drug. Many
authorities however would still prefer further studies before making a
final decision. They state that doctors should watch for signs of any
problems forming. There is definite reason for removal of the drug from
some markets if further evidence shows that Acomplia will do more harm
than good. Studies have also been done for a number of other weight
loss drugs, but have not shown any noticeable bad psychological results.
